Geomechanics is now recognized as a significant contributing technology to the better understanding of asset performance in both conventional and unconventional resources. It plays a critical role from quantifying drilling risks of exploration wells to maximising recovery of difficult hydrocarbon resources and mature reservoirs. The range of geomechanics issues is wide and interfaces with many other disciplines (e.g., petrophysics, geophysics, production geology, drilling, production and reservoir engineering).
Wellbore Geomechanics is involved in managing hole stability while drilling, optimising sand control strategy and ensuring well completion integrity. Reservoir Geomechanics and large scale geological deformations over production and/or geologic times are important considerations in exploration, development and production operations. Examples include: Field development planning and integrity; depletion induced reservoir compaction and fault reactivation; and wells and formation integrity during HPHT and EOR operations.
Safe and effective field operation is built on the understanding of the subsurface in-situ stress state at all times, the quantification of key subsurface uncertainties through well thought-out data gathering and characterisation programs, the integration with appropriate geomechanics modeling and the field surveillance/monitoring strategy. Furthermore, the optimum application of advanced hydraulic fracture stimulation technology in unconventional reservoirs requires not only sound understanding of stress regime, but also natural fractures, rock mechanical parameters and fluid-driven fracture mechanics.
In this context, the Forum will focus on new reservoir challenges and how recent advances and emerging technologies in the area of Geomechanics can be applied. The Forum will discuss topics related to:
